Art School High

Description

Exhibition Opening: May 13th
Opening: 1-3 PM
Artists’ Conversation: 3-4 PM

The Smith Foundation presents Art School High, a group exhibition curated by Dr. Patrik Andersson. From May 13th to August 26th, The Gordon Smith Gallery will exhibit works by twelve established Canadian artists: Karin Bubaš, John Collins, Rodney Graham, Scott Livingstone, Ken Lum, Jean MacRae, Kyla Mallett, Shannon Oksanen, Kathy Slade, Ron Terada, Neil Wedman and David Wisdom.

Having once navigated the experience of high school, these artists provide a diverse reflection on a time salient to many. This exhibition is a unique opportunity to explore visual responses to the depths and quirks of the adolescent years. Schooling may have made us who we are, but it has also been a source of serious anxieties; this exhibition will confront socio-cultural issues relating to identity, conformity, marginalization and rebellion. With tones that shift from humorous to critical, the work presented in Art School High challenges preconceptions, provokes memories, and spurs dialogue.
