Art Show & Silent Auction in support of NOSBIS- Looking for “brain themed” art donations

My name is Carla Du Toit and I am currently a student at UBC Okanagan. I am in my third year BSc, currently majoring in microbiology. I am working on my pre-med requirements, and hope to one day study medicine and specialize in neurology.

For a while now I have wanted to join my passion for art and medicine, and create a project that can involve the community in supporting a local charity. I saw the North Okanagan-Shuswap Brain Injury Society building one afternoon as I was driving home from work, and after researching the website, feel strongly in supporting what they stand for.

My idea is to host an event this summer, to which local artists (such as myself, my peers, and anyone willing to contribute) can donate art, with a theme of “the brain”. These collected pieces will be auctioned off at a silent auction event from July 10th-13th, in support of NOSBIS.

I was inspired to use the brain as a theme after seeing the amazing biomedical imagery being produced from the “Human Connectome Project” (http://www.humanconnectomeproject.org/) during a neuroscience lecture. There are so many ways to be creative with regards to this theme!

There are no restrictions on the type of art donated, as long as it can be related to the brain in some way. The images can range from abstract pictures of neurons, geometric migraine hallucinations, brain connections or even something as seemingly unrelated as a field of flowers- related through perception or feeling (anxiety relief, for example). The possibilities are endless; as long as the artwork can be auctioned off and enjoyed by the buyer, the donation would be much appreciated.

When I first created this project, I envisioned paintings; however, I have since had interest from artists in using other types of media. I even have someone knitting “brain” toques- so there will be quite a variety of contributions.
