Central Okanagan Hospice Association Call for Art for Expressions of Death: dying, grief and life after

The Central Okanagan Hospice Association (COHA) offers compassionate care, comfort, support and learning to those who are dying or grieving within our community. We all will die, yet the words, death, dying, died are spoken in hushed whispers if they are spoken at all. Through the denial of our death, we deny those around us the knowing of our wishes, fears, and hopes. We deny lasting connection in our final breaths. Through starting the conversation on living until death, we hope to create an atmosphere where to die is not to lose a fight, but an inevitable step on one’s journey.

Please join us in these conversations as COHA moves the conversation of living until death from behind closed doors into our community. We believe that much of the stigma around death, dying and grief can be challenged through a normalization of these processes. To do this we are inviting local artists to submit artwork that investigates the theme of ‘Expressions of Death: dying, grief and life after’. This theme need not be dark, although it is welcome to be, for death, grief and our lives after are experiences we will all share in common. They change us forever, but through change can come great growth, as well as heartache. We are looking for work that encourages conversation and engages with the community.

The Group Exhibition will be held at the Alternator Gallery in Kelowna, BC from September 8, 2015 until September 19, 2015. There will be an opening reception, date to be announced, that artists and guests are invited to attend. Following the reception, the exhibition will be open to the public until Saturday, September 19, 2015.

The Group Exhibition application deadline is Monday, July 13, 2015. A jury consisting of an organizing committee will review submissions. The jury’s decision will relate to what works best suit the theme of ‘Expressions of Death: dying, grief and life after’ as well as the limited size of the venue. Notifications will be sent via email by Tuesday, July 28, 2015 to all applicants.
