Closing the Loop: Rug Hooking in Home and Community

Description

This exhibition brings together the work of four textile artists in East Vancouver who have rediscovered rug hooking as a form of textile art traditionally relegated to women in the home and who have re-evaluated its creative and functional possibilities. Like the modern quilting movement, modern rug hooking acknowledges the gendered traditional and folk roots of the craft, yet is sophisticated in its aesthetic influences and technical experimentation. For these four artists, home has multiple meanings: literally, home is often where we make, display, and use our rugs; figuratively, home in art signals a transformation of the quotidian or mundane; finally, home is a network of local connections and geographies that inspires and encourages.

Workshop: Introduction to Rug Hooking, September 17, 2017, 1-4 pm.
