Coast Salish Stories featuring Fern Gabriel

Deer Lake Art Gallery is hosting a storytelling of the Kwantlen First Nation that will be featuring Sesmelot – Fern Gabriel. Storytelling will be on Saturday, May 19 beginning at 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

Fern Gabriel, ancestral name Sesmelot from Kwantlen First Nation. Fern is passionate about sharing the history and stories of the Kwantlen First Nation. Fern is the host/storyteller for Kwantlen Walking Tours, held on Kwantlen Traditional Territory. The walks are held in Fort Langley and Whonnock Lake- Maple Ridge. Fern shares stories that are hundreds — and even thousands — of years old, passed through generations of First Nation peoples. Fern explains the importance of environmental stewardship through stories of the salmon, the sturgeon and the eagle.

Fern has been nominated for a British Columbia Multicultural Award. She is a Language & Cultural Teacher and an amazing storyteller and works full time with the Langley School District. Fern is an avid soccer player and shares the love of hockey and soccer with her family.
