Deer Lake Gallery – Gallery Docent Volunteer Needed

The Burnaby Arts Council (BAC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the visual, literary and performing arts. Its aim is to bring the community together through the Arts. The BAC operates Deer Lake Gallery, featuring visual art exhibitions by local, emerging, and established artists, as well as serving as a hub for creatives in Burnaby by hosting a variety of talks, workshops and special events.

The BAC is seeking to fill the volunteer position of Gallery Docent. This is an excellent position for someone who enjoys dynamic arts environments, is friendly and outgoing, has a genuine interest in art, is highly organized, self-motivated and enjoys interacting and making connections with people.

Responsibilities
– Open and close Gallery; making sure the gallery is presentable
– Greet visitors with a friendly attitude, encourage visitors to sign the guest book; be an exemplary face for the Gallery
– Inform visitors of upcoming events and future exhibits, answer any questions visitors may have for the Gallery and current exhibits
– Make the occasional sale or membership purchase
– Perform odd tasks around the gallery during down time
– Provide excellent customer service when answering phone and responding to general inquiries

Qualifications
– Excellent communication skills in English – other languages are beneficial
– Comfortable dealing with a wide range of people; excellent interpersonal skills
– Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team – Punctual, approachable open minded, with presentable appearance
– Willingness to learn about current exhibits and artists, and share your knowledge with visitors

Availability between 12 – 4 pm, Tuesdays – Saturday, once every 2 weeks
