Exhibition – Distant Tales

Description

Distant Tales is an exhibition that will be held at the Deer Lake Art Gallery featuring the collaborative works of Fiona Tang & Kathleen McGiveron, and is hosted and organized by the Burnaby Arts Council. The exhibition will open Saturday, June 8, 2019 from 12 to 4 pm and will run until June 29, 2019.

Distant Tales explores a variety of the legendary beasts that roam in and around the Pacific Northwest. These creatures are mythical in stature and their presence is breath-taking and awe-inspiring. In our exhibition, Distant Tales, we connect each creature to an element of our Earth. As you look upon these beasts, both of which are created using earth’s materials (clay and charcoal), you will notice how each artist has integrated the elements into the works.

Fiona Tang is a Vancouver-based artist who completed her BFA at Emily Carr University in May 2014 with a Drawing Major. Tang often works with charcoal, chalk pastel and acrylic in the style of trompe l’oeil. She frequently uses animals as her subjects and creates big expressive and energetic drawings. Her animal drawings are typically life-size or larger to emphasize the interaction of viewers to her art. Tang has had group shows at the Concourse Gallery, Ayden Gallery, Richmond Art Gallery, The Fall, Anvil Centre, Wood Innovation and Design Centre, Vancouver Lipont Art Centre, dual shows at Queen Elizabeth Theatre and Gryphon Musée, and solo shows at Queen’s Park Gallery and City Centre Community Centre. She was also featured in a public art project called “No. 3 Road Art Columns” in Richmond, BC.

Kathleen McGiveron’s rebellious and strange, lowbrow artwork uses the style of the kitsch, ceramic figurine to present her reflections on popular culture, politics, and internal musings. McGiveron graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (ECUAD) in 2011 and completed her teaching degree at Simon Fraser University in 2012. McGiveron has been showing her work both in commercial and public galleries in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley since graduating from ECUAD. McGiveron’s work has been exhibited in contemporary and lowbrow galleries in Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.
