FENCES – Call For Submissions – Visual Artists

FENCES evoke association with words like ‘border,’ and ‘security’. Like a wall, they keep people, animals or things apart from each other, control access, provide safety, or prevent escape. A fence can be an invisible boundary built from assumptions, preconceptions, cultural differences, and bias or a friendly boundary born of respect. Depending on how it is made, a fence can appear threatening or welcoming. Barbed wire fences convey “do not cross”. Conversely, a low, white picket fence can be inviting. In the context of contemporary world movements and resurgence in Nationalism, fences can be thought of as structures with which to assert ideological and other differences. This call for submissions invites consideration of FENCES, the power they have over our behaviour, and the different types of physical, symbolic or metaphoric fences that exist politically, socially and personally.

This call is restricted to visual artists who reside within the province of British Columbia, working in any media. Artists whose work is selected will receive an exhibition fee. Projected exhibition date is: January 18, to April 1, 2018.
