Fireweed: Arts Show & Fundraiser at Bandidas Taqueria

Description

Fireweed: Art Show and Fundraiser

Bandidas Taqueria is hosting a community art show and fundraiser

Where: Bandidas Taqueria, 2781 Commercial Drive
When: January 20th, 2017, 9:00am to 1:00am (art will hang until February 20th, 2017)

Fireweed is a vibrant plant and one of the first species to grow after a forest fire or environmental devastation. Its appearance is one of the first signs of regeneration and rebuilding. The US election results have delivered a sharp wake-up call: as a community, we need to do more to listen, speak up, and stand up for our collective rights. We want to act with our community to build hope, defend the marginalized, use our privilege to effect social change, and work towards prevention of further crises.

On January 20th, 2017, we will donate 100% of our profits to a variety of organizations which serve people and environments most vulnerable to policy changes that are likely to result from a Trump presidency. We believe artists’ voices are necessary, and particularly so in times of struggle. Visual artists are invited to create, show, and sell pieces which respond to the US election. The pieces will show (and can be put up for sale) at Bandidas for one month starting on January 20th, 2017. All money generated from art sales will be retained by the artist. We value the work that you do and believe that you should be paid fairly for it. Your involvement in the art show will draw more people to the event, which will ultimately mean more money raised.

Timeline for contributing artists:

December 20th, 2016 – All artists must confirm their participation in the project, and commit to the established timeline (If you find out about this after the 20th, email us and we’ll try to make space!)
January 13th, 2017 – All artists must submit a high-quality image of the work being shown at Bandidas, the dimensions, a 2-3 sentence description of the work, price (if it’s for sale), and any contact info for sharing. We will be making an art guide for Bandidas customers for the day of the event.
January 18th, 2017 – All art must be delivered to Bandidas at a time pre-arranged with Aiyana. Any art that does not arrive by 7pm on the 18th, may not be able to be hung in the Fireweed Art Show.
February 20th, 2017 – Art comes down and is picked up by buyers or artists.

Note: For regular art shows at Bandidas we have some imposed parameters–we’re a family restaurant and have to be mindful of what hangs on our walls for an extended period of time. For this event, we’d like to lift those restrictions as much as possible. However, if you anticipate that your piece could be faced with resistance, considered blatantly offensive, or is overtly graphic, please get in touch ahead of time to discuss the concept. We want artists to be free to express in whatever way they feel they need to, but we also need to make sure our customers feel safe. In some cases, your work might hang for the event itself, on January 20th, but not for the full month afterwards. We reserve the right to decide this.
