Grand Prix of Art 2018

Description

We invite artists, art-lovers, and art-curious onlookers to join us for the Steveston Grand Prix of Art on Saturday September 22, 2018. This is the 8th year of this hugely popular event, which brings a wide range of artists, volunteers, and community members together to celebrate both artistic creativity and our unique Steveston neighborhood.

The picturesque Japanese fishing village of Steveston, situated at the mouth of the mighty Fraser River, is the stunning location for the Grand Prix of Art. Nestled between 100-year old cannery buildings, boat-works, and the largest gill-net fishing fleet in North America, this idyllic waterfront community is straight out of the pages of a John Steinbeck novel. Our event has become a model for many similar events across BC and the Pacific Northwest. Over 100 artists of all ages and experience levels joining us for a day of intense fun and competition as they race against the clock in this painting challenge.

The painting race begins at exactly 10am, and artists have just three hours to create a work of art inspired by their randomly assigned locations. At 1pm they put down their brushes, return to Britannia Shipyards, and prepare their paintings for display and adjudication. Awards are presented to top artists in Master, Open, and Youth categories, with over $5000 in cash awards and prizes.

Thanks to the support and international scope of our new community partner, McArthurGlen Designer Outlet Vancouver Airport, we are happy to announce the addition of the Masters Category to this year’s event, inviting experienced artists to test their plein-air skills against the very best artists in the Pacific Northwest. Each Masters Category artist has a dedicated profile page on our event website, and the Masters Category winner takes home the coveted “Dan Gray Cup” and a 1st Place prize of $2,000.

Hundreds of spectators enjoy watching artists painting on location during race day and visiting the exhibition in the historic Seine Net Loft at Britannia Heritage Shipyards. The exhibition is open for display and artwork sales from 3-5:45pm on Saturday the 22nd, and from 12-4pm on Sunday the 23rd. Everyone is welcome to cast their votes for the People’s Choice Award.

We hope you will be able to join us at this year’s Grand Prix of Art: Steveston! You can find more information on the event, location, and participating artists at www.grandprixofart.com and lease don’t hesitate to call event coordinator and key sponsor Mark Glavina at 604-448-1860.
