July exhibition at Smithers Art Gallery: “Freedom of Form” by Arlene Ness

“Freedom of Form” is a solo exhibition by First Nations artist Arlene Ness from Hazelton, BC. Show dates: June 10-July 26, 2014. Arlene Ness is an incredible talent – most artists become accomplished in just one medium, but Ness seems to master every art form she turns her hand to. This exhibition showcases her exquisite carvings, stunning contemporary paintings as well as traditional forms and colours, drums and rattles, pen and ink blocks, button blankets, and stained glass. Each piece is inspired by stories from her rich cultural heritage and translated into art as she sees them in her mind. The influence of the spectacular surroundings of northern BC can also be seen in her work, from the totems at Kispiox to the mountains and forests of the Northwest Coast. The sky is the limit for this young artist; the gallery is honoured to be showing her work in our community and looks forward to watching her stellar career trajectory. Gallery hours: Tues-Fri 12-5pm, Sat 9am-4pm. www.smithersart.org, info@smithersart.org, (250) 847-3898.
