Live at the Gallery, April 2018

The February features local artists John Gonzalez and SHOCKK. The event is being hosted and organized by the Burnaby Arts Council. Live at the Gallery event will be held at 7 pm on Saturday, April 7th, 2018.

Live at the Gallery is a chance to bring music into the gallery setting, to connect the visual and the musical arts, and the fans of both. Live at the Gallery is an exciting mix of art and sound! From the sweet sounds of classical music to chilled out beats of local folk bands. Expect the unexpected!

The Burnaby Arts Council are passionate about promoting the arts as a vital component of our city’s culture. We take great pleasure in offering this FREE music concert series and welcome you to the Deer Lake Art Gallery! Live at the Gallery is an opportunity for Deer Lake to have another regular venue for local musicians to play and local enthusiasts to listen. It also provides an opportunity to subvert the often rigid structure of an art gallery by having an interactive presentation being held within it.

Interior Design is a project by guitarist/composer Shockk Mongoose in which ambient sounds, night photography and music combine to create a series of darkly lyrical tonal landscapes. Deploying subtly detailed beats and effects with fretboard technique, bursts of color with rich drones and Reichian loops, Shockk’s music locates a still point in the listerner’s mind; it’s a headphone trip in an unknown part of the city with an unobtrusive companion. Rob (SHOCKK) Matharu has played lead guitar in many punk rock bands for over fifteen years, touring Canada, USA and Japan. In addition to his collaborative projects, he teaches, composes experimental music and captures railway tracks, trains and empty industrial sites at night, meandering through the city with his camera.

John Gonzalez is Colombian-Canadian accordion player who specializes in Latin Music, specifically Vallenato and Cumbia. His particular style of playing is heavily influenced by his travels and broad cultural experiences. John has studied accordion technique under the direction of Ivan Chaparro, El Turco Gil, Javier Villalobos, Luis Javier Hernandez, Konstantin R. Bozhinov and the famous accordion player: Sergio Luis Rodriguez. He is currently attending the Vancouver Community College School of Music in the program of jazz.
