Portraits

Description

Oscar Wilde claimed that, ‘Every portrait that is painted with feeling is a portrait of the artist, not of the sitter.’ Now, keep in mind that this is the same Oscar Wilde who wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray!

Portraits is an Open Call show that invited artists to portray people or animals literally, or figuratively using symbols to convey their identity. Coast Collective Gallery received more than 60 submissions including paintings in a variety of media, photography, and mixed media. While some artists opted for classic portraiture inspired by painters of the Renaissance period, others favoured a more symbolic approach – one is actually a scannable QR (quick response) code painted on canvas that links to a photo archive of the artist’s life. And of course, no portrait display would be complete without some of our four-legged friends.

Portraits runs from June 12th to June 23rd with the Meet-the-Artists Reception taking place on Friday, June 14th from 7 to 9 pm.

Operated by the Society for Arts on the South Island (SASI), whose mission statement is to nurture British Columbia arts and culture … through the production and support of showcases of fine art and craft, the provision of arts education programs, public performances, and special community cultural events, the Coast Collective Art Centre is open 11:00 to 5:00 Wednesday through Sunday.  You can reach us at 250-391-5522 or email gallery@coastcollective.ca for more information.  www.coastcollective.ca
