Learn from scratch how to paint using transparent watercolour paint. Explore watercolour painting through vibrant and creative sketching: from landscapes and street views to still life and botanical compositions. This program is for anybody who is just starting their journey in watercolour painting.

Learn how to create botanical portraits, depict light and shadow and break down complex forms into simple ones. Students will explore the latest watercolour and drawing techniques and learn how to capture natural details and colour while learning about shapes and composition. The class will explore different floral species and often paint from real flowers and plants. Get inspiration from streets and gardens all year round and learn how to create botanical paintings from flowers in spring, vegetation in summer, fruits and vegetables in fall, and dried leaves, seeds, mosses and vegetables in winter.

This is an opportunity to continue practicing acrylic painting techniques for Intermediate learners. This course will help students to develop objective observation ability and painting methods for both still-life and landscape. Students will continue exploring form, colour, light, perspective and composition to achieve ideal painting results. In addition, by learning master artworks, students will find their personalized artistic styles and diversified painting strategies. Also, students will have class art critiques in an art atelier environment.

From sketching building facades to busy streets with moving vehicles on rainy day scenes, urban landscape paintings are a great way for artists at any level to explore different painting techniques. In this class, you will learn how to paint “on the go” with a mini watercolour palette and an ink pen, occasionally exploring Vancouver’s amazing heritage houses or streets. In addition to the ink pen and watercolour painting method, participants will learn how to sketch with watercolour to capture dynamic compositions.

This course explores the foundations of working with oil paints and effective ways to learn painting successfully. Students will learn oil painting materials and tools and discover the colour theory and various painting techniques. This course will also cover essential artistic principles such as line, form, light, tone, perspective and composition. Class exercises will enable students to master one essential strategy for oil painting and develop a personal interest in painting by studying the works of masters.
