Description
When: June 26th @ 11am
Beautiful Botanicals in Watercolour with Sonia Mocnik
Buckle up and join Sonia Mocnik for another iconic watercolour demonstration! Here is a break down of June 26th’s Botanical Watercolour program.
In the first 20 minutes, Sonia will paint some Oregon Grape foliage and discuss pre-mixed greens in watercolour including: Cobalt turquoise, Perylene green, Winsor Green (blue shade), Hookers Green Dark, Sap green, Chromium green, and Terre Vert. As she paints, Sonia will discuss how the various greens could be made by mixing other colours together. She will also discuss the pros and cons about using pre-mixed versus mixing. Sonia will demonstrate some of these issues, such as ensuring the paint does not become too opaque or turn to a neutral colour. She will also discuss glazing versus wet on wet, shadows and the amount of paint needed to create a similar consistency as the pre-mixed tubes. In between Sonia will try to include how to use your brushes to create foliage shape – including lifting.
In the following 10 minutes, Sonia will discuss flower shapes and give some additional names of extra flowers besides the ones she will be painting. I will draw the shapes and some of the petals of each flower using the “pink” as a very quick sample of drawing from start to finish.
Flower shape discussion will include…
- Trumpet (petunia)
- Multiheaded (hydrangea)
- Spike (bees balm)
- Simple Star (flower like the pink – small carnation)
Sonia’s next 20 minutes we tackle the painting of a Hydrangea and Petunia – as well as their foliage. This portion will include the mixing of the aforementioned greens. Check out water colours Sonia will be using in the materials list below! Finally, the last 10 minutes will be spent painting a very fast and loose version of Bee Balm.
Sonia will also discuss reading the back of the tube to help learn to mix some of your favorites and try new ideas and will have reference photos on her tablet next to the piece that she is demoing for your viewing pleasure. This demo is highly recommended for those interested in learning about painting botanicals in watercolours, learning about different flower and leaf shapes, and those who would like to experience one of Sonia’s popular demos for themselves!
