Brand Bio:

Since 1915, and the official opening of the Company in 1924 by Arnold Schweitzer, Caran d’Ache’s development has been distinguished by it’s love of beautiful materials. All of our art materials are made under one roof in Thonex, Geneva Switzerland.

Caran d’Ache is a family owned business and the current President is Carole Hubscher. The name Caran d’Ache is a tribute to Emmanuelle Poire. Poire was a Russian Born French cartoonist, who used the Russian word for pencil (Caran d’Ache) as his pseudonym.

Caran d’Ache is on a never ending journey to explore new and intense pigments. The team in Switzerland is constantly improving their various color products like color pencils, pastels, gouache, graphite products and more to insure that in addition to being safe, sustainable and Eco-friendly, that they have excellent surface coverage, the best light fastness, and have the vibrancy that artists from all around the World have come to expect from Caran d’Ache.

National Sale’s Manager Bio:

Stefan Lohrer was born in Zürich, Switzerland in 1959 and moved with his family to New York in the summer of 1966. His father began importing Caran d’Ache art materials in 1974. Stefan joined the family business in 1978 by working in the warehouse. In 1981 he became the warehouse manager and eventually, the Southeast sales representative. In 1993 Stefan left the family business to go out on his own. He returned to Caran d’Ache in 2002 as National Sales Manager. After Caran d’Ache was sold to John and Karen Divis in 2008, the owners of Creative Chemical Solutions, Stefan stayed on as National Sales manager. The company name changed the name of the Company to Creative Art Materials Ltd.

He has an in-depth knowledge of drawing materials in terms of pigments, chemistry, archival qualities and techniques for using the materials.  He annually visits Caran d’Ache in Geneva where the Caran d’Ache materials are made and / or the Frankfurt Fair to stay abreast of new developments of the line.  Stefan travels widely, visiting universities for their artist outreach program.  He has been a frequent visitor to SCAD classrooms in Sequential and Foundation Studies during past academic years as well as PRATT, Georgia Tech, University of Alabama in Birmingham and others.

A large part of the company focus is to reach out to the artist community and place product directly in the hands of artists and art students around the country. Because of his love for the arts, and close relationship with many of the people at Caran d’Ache in Geneva, particularly the chief chemist, Eric Vitus, Stefan is constantly learning more about art materials.

In the last couple of years, Stefan has created a Zoom studio in his office and increased the presence of the Creative Art Materials Ltd., brands on Social Media.
