Charcoal and Cataclysm on Paper with Amory Abbott

September 21, 2019

Description

Saturday, September 21, 11:30am – 1:00pm
Saturday, September 21, 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Join Amory Abbott for an in depth look at his techniques on working with charcoal!

At this demo, Amory will be demonstrating his techniques with compressed charcoal to create one of his signature-style landscape drawings. The material process is often a push and pull between light and dark, soft and rough, clean and dirty. Amory will be exploring different mark-making with both charcoal and eraser, using charcoal sticks, powder, and pencils, his use of photo references for focused details, and tips on how to get the darkest darks, and how to keep white areas clean. Amory will be using a variety of charcoal and erasers to show different approaches to mark-making.

Space is limited and registration is required.
Please visit Opus Coquitlam or contact them at 604‑545‑0410 to register.

About Amory:
I live and work in Vancouver, British Columbia, teaching illustration at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. With charcoal on paper, I use landscapes to explore the conceptual commonalities between the charcoal medium, fire ecology, and land-based spirituality. To me, the deep, mysterious corners of the world are places imbued with wonder, isolation, and ancient magic; remote, mountainous places on the brink of transformation, this time perhaps broken open by our own consequence.
