Drawing: Introduction I

This course provides students with an introduction to the basic materials and techniques of drawing. Emphasis is on elements such as line, shape, value, space, proportion, perspective and composition. In addition, students are encouraged to explore a range of materials and develop personal expression in their drawing. Subject matter includes still life, the figure, landscape, architectural space and student-supplied source material. Suitable for all levels.

Suppy List

Items required for the first class:

- sketch book (8" x 10" or larger)

- at a minimum: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B pencils

- white soft eraser

- pencil sharpener

- Cartridge Paper 18x24 or larger: 10-20 Sheets to start

- Newsprint 18x24 or larger: 30-40 Sheets to start


Additional items to be discussed during the first class:

- grey gum eraser (kneadable)

- compressed charcoal

- willow or vine stick charcoal

- kneaded eraser

- blending stumps (3-4 in various sizes)

- Conté (black, white and sanguine)

- India ink

- Chinese brushes (2 different sizes)

- 1 large Hake brush (2 ½” or 3”)

- 10-well plastic palette for inks or small plastic container(s)

- rags (old and used is fine)

- scissors

- masking tape

- glue (white or stick)


Paper: (sizes do not need to be exact. As close as possible is fine)

- White bristol/tag (Plate finish) (x 5)

- Stonehenge, white (x 5)

- Stonehenge, black (x 1)

- Strathmore Art Again Gotham Grey paper (or any grey pastel or other  drawing paper) (x 4)



- Drawing Board
