Drawing for absolute beginners (or those who feel a bit rusty…)
“I am seeing the world through new eyes because of the work we are doing and I don’t want to stop.” -Past Student
Using Betty Edwards’ “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” as a guiding text, this (newly extended!) seven week class will cover
- contour lines
- finding the simple shapes in what we see
- negative space
- perspective
- shading
- gesture/the figure (drawing from a live model!)
- an introduction to facial proportions
What makes this class different:
- small class size (5-8 students)
- structured drawing exercises that focus on one skill at a time
- optional homework for those who want to extend their learning outside of class
- and most importantly…we talk about what drawing feels like! If you’ve been frustrated with drawing (and who hasn’t?), this is the class for you. We will talk about how children’s drawing skills develop, explore some theory about what happens in the brain when we draw, and how to get in the right mindset to really draw what you see!
Details:
This is a class for adult beginners. (16 years and older.)
We meet Sunday mornings 10am-12:30, with a short snack break (tea and snack provided).
March 22- May 10. No class April 12 for the long weekend.
$255 for all seven sessions. Drop-in option available if space allows, $40 for one session, 3 days advanced notice required. (Each week has a different focus, so write for the schedule.)
About the instructor:
Jacquie Rolston has been teaching art classes for children since 2004. She noticed that parents seemed more scared of drawing than her young students and began offering classes for adults too!
About the space:
We meet at Jacquie’s cheerfully-shabby studio, which is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. It is up a flight of stairs. Please let Jacquie know if this is a barrier for you.
Other classes:
Jacquie also offers private lessons, as well as an advanced class focusing on drawing faces/portraits. Please inquire for more info.
Special Instructions
Dress to get messy as we will use ink and charcoal.
Prerequisites
None, zip, nada! You don't have to have any drawing experience or 'talent', just a willingness to try new things.
