Art Beatus (Vancouver) Consultancy Ltd is very pleased to present Dreamland Cafe, an online solo exhibition of mixed media works by gallery artist, Taiga Chiba. Throughout his artistic career, travel has been an elemental part of his creative practice and this series of 19 works, created in 2019 during his second residency in Mandalay, Myanmar, is no exception.
During his residency, the artist stayed at the Dreamland guest house and his typical day would start at 6.30am by playing some tennis with the local residents, followed by breakfast at the Dreamland Cafe after a shower, and then work in the studio. Chiba, the irrepressible perennial traveller, likes to immerse himself into the local culture and is often inspired by the visual vernacular of the region by utilizing everyday objects and synthesizing them with his quirky and whimsical imagination. In this series of works, he experiments with media such as relief printing, fabric dye painting, acrylic fabric liner and embroidery to depict “motifs of Hindu temples, street objects, traditional shoe repair, and painting tools.”
Chiba has such an affinity for travel that he is not dampened by illnesses during his trips; in fact, he just incorporates them into his creative process: “Quite often I get sick in an unfamiliar environment, such as catching a cold or getting food poisoning. While being laid low with a fever, many thoughts come and go in my mind; then all of a sudden, some good ideas pop up strangely. When I get better, I try to realize the idea.”
Taiga Chiba was born in Shizuoka, Japan and studied in Tokyo at Atelier Furan Art School and Musashino Art University, earning a Bachelor of Arts from the Plastic Arts program. He immigrated to Canada in 1981 and in 1986, he graduated from Concordia University in Montreal with a Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts. Chiba has exhibited locally and internationally for over 40 years, been the recipient of several awards and grants, and has participated in numerous artist residencies around the world. His work can be found in many public and private collections in North America, Asia and Europe.
