Encaustic Basics and R&F Pigments with Megan MacDonald

November 20, 2021

Description

When: Nov 20, 2021 @ 11am (1.5hr demo)

Encaustic Basics & R&F Pigment Sticks One of the oldest forms of painting, encaustics holds a myriad of possibilities to the modern artist. Encaustics have a beautiful otherworldly depth and a tactile, sumptuous surface.  The encaustic painting can be as smooth as glass or it can be built up, scraped back, drawn on and carved into. The combinations are endless.

Join Megan for a little peek into her encaustic focused studio where she will discuss what you need to get started to introduce encaustics into your studio or art practice. Whether you want to dip your toe in or jump full cannon-ball into encaustics, Megan will discuss what you will need to get started.

Using Opus’ newly introduced R&F Encaustic paints and pigment sticks, Megan’s demonstration will include studio set up and safety, substrate and surface prep, working with encaustic paint to create visual and physical texture, use of heated palette for mixing and blending colours, various ways of mark making and finally finishing of pieces using R&F Pigment sticks

Artist Bio

Megan MacDonald is a visual artist and instructor, newly based out of Kelowna BC.

Throughout out her career, she has explored a variety of mediums, however for the past 15 years her studio and work has been primarily focused on the encaustic process.

“I am drawn to the beauty of nature and the natural organic elements that envelop us, the line of a branch, the calm of the ocean as the sun rises over it, the intimate world of a tide pool and how we interact with it, how it impacts us and how we feel in natures wake.”

Drawn to natural, organic forms and the energy of hand drawn lines  MacDonald investigates the alchemy that occurs with the convergence of natural elements while experimenting with the play between physical and visual texture in encaustic.
