In this halloween themed printmaking demonstration, Kate Hamel Tucker will be outlining the ins and outs of getting started in block printing. To begin, she will discuss basic block printing knowledge including design considerations for block printing, transferring images onto a block, and common mistakes to avoid. This will be followed by a demonstration of techniques such as block carving, ink application, and hand printing using her own Cat’O’Lantern block on both paper and fabric. Full of tips and tricks, this demo is perfect for first-time and practiced block printers alike!

About Kate Hamel
Kate Hamel Tucker is the artist behind @owlhousestudio, she carves and prints from her studio on the bayou in Mound, Louisiana. She studied printmaking at the University of Virginia where she graduated with degrees in Studio Art and Environmental Science. Her work is inspired by the natural world, especially the ecology and folklore of native wildlife. Currently available prints can be found at Owlhousedesign.com
Materials List
- Speedball unmounted gray linoleum OR Speedball pink speedycarve (the artist will go over the strengths and differences of both materials)
- Speedball pro relief ink in super graphic black (for paper) AND/OR speedball fabric block printing ink (for fabric)
- Pencil
- #90 sheer vellum tracing paper or similar
- Paper tape (washi or painters)
- Speedball lino cutter set
- Speedball soft brayer 4”
- Speedball baren
- Flat surface to roll ink: this could be a flat piece of glass or tray
- Test paper or t-shirt rag for test printing
- Paper (arnheim or Japanese style paper- Kate will discuss both), blank greeting cards, t-shirts, or fabric for printing (Kate will have finished paper prints, greeting cards, and tees as examples of what can be done with this process)
Optional:
- Spoon for easier image transfer
- Watercolours or pigment markers to color paper images when dry if desired
- Apron
- Towel to place under fabric if fabric printing
