In this demonstration, talented oil painter Steve Chmilar will outline and demonstrate the methods of light and composition used in his painting practice. Steve will begin his demo with an introduction to basic techniques for the effective use and depiction of light before venturing into demonstrations of more advanced theories such as creating the illusion of light and using local colour versus light colour, for those interested in delving further. This phenomenal overview will contain knowledge applicable to individuals at any stage of their artistic pursuits and individuals interested in using methods of composition and depiction of light across all media.

My goal with this demonstration is to create “ah-hah” moments by changing the way that we think about light in representational art. By utilizing the value scale and my principles of soft light, we can understand how artists such as Raphael and Rembrandt were able to make their paintings appear to glow from within.

Steven Chmilar is a Canadian artist recognized for his highly detailed oil paintings and drawings. After a decade-long professional career as a musician (2002 – 2012), he found success in his original artistic pursuit of visual art. Through fairs, group shows and online exposure, he has been able to paint full-time since 2012 and is one of the new contemporary artists that have been able to reach an international audience through mainly independent representation. After living in Toronto until 2018, he currently resides on Vancouver Island where he works out of his seaside studio in the town of Sidney.
