Oil Pastel Painting en Plein Air with Peri-Laine Nilan
Join BC artists Peri-Laine Nilan for a wonderful introduction to oil pastels and their uses! Oil pastels are a versatile medium that can be used alone or with other mediums; perfect for studio or plein air painting. Peri-Laine will show her audience how with just a few basic techniques the artist can create a composition that glows with bold colours, texture and light. Learn some tips on preparing the substrate, packing for a plein air outing and working through the painting process. Perfect for anyone interested in learning more about oil pastels, seeing this glorious medium in action, or for those curious in picking up a new medium in time for Plein Air season.
Materials List
Watercolour paper 140lb cold press
Fluid acrylic paint (for coloured ground)
Flat sponge paintbrush 1/5’-2”
Krylon Gallery Series UV Archival spray varnish (satin or matte)
Holbein Oil pastels (assorted colours)
Sennelier Oil pastels (assorted colours)
Gatorboard or lightweight support (ie: cardboard)
Green painter’s tape or artist’s tape
Lightweight Plein Air easel such as the Sierra Watercolour Easel or Sierra Aluminium Tripod Easel (or drawing board and bull clips)
Small sketchbook and drawing pencil
Small sealed container
Tissues
Credit card, skewer, etc for sgraffito techniques

Artist Bio
Peri-Laine began formal art study in Mexico, then completed her BA as an Art major at the University of Berkeley, California. She went on to complete her Art Education training at UBC, and a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Arts Education from SFU. Peri Laine taught in the public school system for 35 years. Now retired, the artist continues to work in her home studio, to teach classes and workshops in the community and privately. Peri-Laine is an active member of the Federation of Canadian Artists, and the BC Art Teachers Association.
