Lorna loves having the artistic freedom to create bold, playful pillows and textile art that will add color, pattern and a story to a space. For her, the act of creating unique artwork using a sewing machine, thread, quirky pattern combinations, and collage techniques is an absolute joy.
Join Lorna as she shows key examples of the techniques from her past and present work, talks about her sources of inspiration, and touches on the projects she’s worked on over the years. Attendees will gain insight into examples of fabric manipulation to create textural surfaces, learn how Lorna uses the traditional art of appliqué to piece her fabric portraits together, and understand how drawing and tracing is used as a guide in her designs. Though Opus does not carry many fabrics or sewing notions, we know Lorna’s demo will offer heaps of inspiration for experimentation and projects ranging from mixed media, to sculpture!

Fabrics and Notions (not carried at Opus)
- wool melton as a backing fabric
- cottons, linens, chiffons and velvets for appliqués
- cotton-polyester threads

Artist Bio
Since graduating from the Glasgow school of Art in the late 80s with degrees in textile design, Lorna has used the sewing machine as her tool to create multi layered complex artwork with detail and depth. She set up in business making one of a kind textiles and sold work in galleries and stores in the UK and North America. Lorna has also created several large permanent textile art installations for hospitals, Library‘s, mental health clinics and schools. In 2002 Lorna, her geologist husband and their two kids traveled around the world working in the remote mountains of north eastern Turkey, the jungles of Borneo and in the South African veldt, before finally settling in beautiful Vancouver in 2012.
She has exhibited regularly at the Circle Craft Christmas market at the Vancouver convention centre and you’ll find her work in galleries on Bowen and Granville island and at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
