Young Virgin Mary Painting after Giovanni Battista Salvi da Sassoferrato.
Egg tempera is probably one of the best painting methods for portraits because its translucency lends itself to capturing the nuances of the skin tone. Each successive layer of painting is affected by the underlying ones.
Learn transparent layering – glazing with egg tempera. The tempera paint is not pushed into the painting surface as with other paints, but rather built up in layers that dry quickly so each succeeding coat does not disturb the previous layers.
Egg tempera in applied in thin glazes laid on top of each other until the desired color, saturation and shadows are achieved. Egg tempera dries quickly and cannot be blended once applied.
Building layers allows to achieve luminosity, which is one of the main characteristics of egg tempera painting.
