Saturday, August 24 & Sunday, August 25 from 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM

Enjoy a beautiful weekend of painting outdoors in a lush, whimsical garden on Bowen Island. You’ll enjoy instruction, personalized coaching and demonstrations by renowned Canadian painter, Deborah Tilby.

A multitude of elements go into making a good landscape painting, many of which will be covered in this workshop, including: composition, value sketches, black and white studies, and blocking-in with full colour.

To create a beautiful painting, the beginning stages are crucial. Deborah will be paying particular attention to creating a solid beginning. The initial block-in of compositional shapes can have an enormous effect on the progress of that painting; it can flow relatively smoothly or be a struggle all the way through. Deborah will demonstrate several ways to tackle the initial block-in stage to help set you up for success. Deborah will offer individual help and demonstrate her experienced approach to any problems that may arise.

The weekend will be spent learning and painting in the garden, using its varied landscape and scenery as a source of inspiration. Masterpieces are not expected and critique will be provided on request. Relax, enjoy, learn & experiment!

The $325.00 fee for this 2-day workshop includes lunch on both days.
Art materials, accommodation and ferry travel are not included in the cost of this 2-day workshop.

General Stuff To Bring:

Let’s assume the weather will be fine. Otherwise bring/wear extra work jacket, layers, long pants, warm hat, extra socks & dry boots. If it gets warm…you can always take them off!

Dress in layers: it might seem hot but standing or sitting still for a couple of hours can chill you, or you might want a spot/view in the shade. Be prepared – bring an extra layer.

Sunshine: Big hat, neutral tint sunglasses, sunscreen, long sleeve shirt to keep the sun off. Drink lots of water.

Personal: Don’t forget those other glasses! Any personal items, medications, eye drops etc. to last you for a long day/weekend. Carry a snack bar and water so you don’t have to stop painting. This is an isolated location and there are not the usual shops & amenities on Bowen Island as in the city.

Tech devices & Media: Bring your charger and extra batteries! Record your location with a camera, smartphone or iPad while working on location to have additional references when you return to your studio. You are welcome to take photos of the demos and painting examples. Please turn off your ringers and notifications and respect other artists’ privacy. Please don’t post photos of others on social media without their permission.
