Sketching-on-the-Spot with Bob Altwein

July 08, 2022

Description

When: July 8th, 2022 at 11:00 am – 12:30 (PST)

Sketching-on-the-Spot with Bob Altwein

Sketching can be a portal to all kinds of subject matter!  Join Bob Altwein in this demo as he explores a variety of themes: people that one knows (or doesn’t), public spaces, in your home, food, rural or wilderness settings, travelling/road trips, social reportage and even storytelling. Prepare for fun and to discover a theme or two that might resonate with you!

Demo participants will see the use of waterproof ink in fountain pens – with or without watercolour, coloured pencil with or without watercolour as well as watercolour pencil just on its own. For the primal sketching experience, Bob will even touch on drawing lines with a sharpened twig and regular ink. At the heart of all this is exploring and immersing oneself in observation with our art materials.

Bob will also discuss how mood and atmosphere can be achieved with line and colour as well as the added drama of the composition itself. This could be as simple as having your subject matter go right off the edge of the paper or by working with the rule of thirds.

Artist Bio:

Apart from sketching and painting I worked as a graphic designer. Drawing started in childhood, which became sketching in high school and later in art school too. Shortly after retiring over a decade ago, I returned to this with passion and even joined the Vancouver Urban Sketchers Meet Up, where I became one of the co-organizers (hosting some of the meetups). Another highlight was an artist residency in Eastend, Sask, in 2017. The following year I went to Europe which included sketching and meeting urban sketchers in Kyiv, Hamburg, Berlin and Paris. Under pandemic conditions, sketching-on-the spot led me to clinics (where I got vaccinated at the same time), taped off playgrounds and even to pursuing virtual portrait sessions with other artists and friends.P
