Whether working from a live model or a reference photo, painting the human form is one of the most challenging yet satisfying subjects to render. The figure provides a way for the artist to instantly connect with the viewer by providing something familiar and relatable. Yet it is what the artists choses to extract from the figure – whether it be a feeling or emotion, vulnerability or power – is what elevates the painting to an experience that can be shared with the viewer.

Tracey Costescu’s work captures the emotion and atmosphere of her subject, balancing classical realism with a contemporary, atmospheric aesthetic. While she works deliberately, consciously employing traditional and non-traditional techniques, a great deal of her work relies on the subconscious, intuitively following the direction that her work takes her. She hopes to provide the viewer a glimpse into a private world of hope, calm and the search for a deeper sense of purpose.
