Description

Depicting the Commonplace with Bob Altwein

When: December 6th, 2020 at 11am PST

Bob sketched when he was in high school, through his Vancouver School of Art (later Emily Carr) years and into his late 20s. Otherwise he was a graphic designer for most of his working life. Shortly after retiring in 2012, Bob returned to sketching and has since been a co-organizer with the Vancouver Urban Sketchers Meet-Up. In 2017 he also did an artist residency in Eastend, Sask and a year later he travelled to Ukraine, Germany and France, which included a lot of sketching. Bob also connected with urban sketchers in Kyiv, Hamburg, Berlin and Paris. Otherwise, he has given workshops on sketching, colour, and composition here in BC.”

“Pandemic times have challenged us all! One way we can navigate through them, as we move in and out of social isolation, is by simply being mindful and observing our home setting. We don’t need to feel limited by lockdowns or even the cold weather. “If this demo is about observing our domestic life through the portal of sketching, then consider how you can respond to objects and things in your home. It is up to us, how we add spirit or presence to our mark making. The aim is not just to try and capture a likeness but to add verve and be playful.”

In this demonstration, Bob will unveil his methods for adding excitement to his “Stuck-at-Home” sketching practice. Through the use of diverse materials, he will explore topics including ways of using the power of composition, incorporating mixed-media for visual interest, portraying mood or narrative, and more! This uplifting and inspiring demo will contain principles and techniques applicable to individuals at any stage of their artistics pursuits, Urban Sketchers looking to make the best of their time at home, or those who would like to take a peek into Bob’s wonderful world of sketching. He looks forward to seeing you at his virtual demonstration and hopes he can boost the unique way in which you portray the world around you!
