Finesse your watercolour paintings by learning to add texture with Frank Townsley!
Frank will be demonstrating techniques on how to add texture into your watercolour painting. Among them will be the ‘dry brush’ technique to add texture in simulating wood grain, cracks in rocks and stonework on old buildings, grass, evergreen trees and forests. It also has a place simulating birch bark, leaves on distant trees, and even fur and hair on mammals. It can also be employed in creating the look of cracked and peeling paint on an old wooden structure.
He will share the technique of splattering can simulate snowfall, wind-blown spume from a breaking wave, stars in the night sky, sand grains on a beach, texture on foreground concrete, as well as achieving that ‘granitic’ look to rocks. The use of salt will also be demonstrated to create the effect of foliage, and even a winter frost.
Using scratching techniques Frank will also show how to create a crashing wave, add snow on distant trees and mountains, a distant grove of aspen trees, as well as highlights on icicles.

Frank Townsley was born in North Vancouver and graduated with honours from the ‘Art Centre, College of Design’ in Pasadena, California in 1979. In the same year he was admitted into the Federation of Canadian artists, and won the first place Shell Canada award at his first exhibition in the spring of 1980. His works had been printed and distributed throughout Canada through Canadian Gallery Prints in Port Moody. For the past 25 years he has taught both watercolour painting and photography through several venues in the lower mainland, and several demonstrations through Opus Art Supplies throughout the province. He has also compiled two instructional DVD’s on watercolour painting, and just released his first book this year on British Columbia, whereby he has incorporated 16 of his watercolour paintings, resulting in a flattering endorsement from wildlife painter Robert Bateman.
