Artists spend so much time and effort creating their works of art, but the final stage of varnishing is often overlooked or misunderstood. In this demo, Winsor & Newton Resident Artist and Director of Education, Jimmy Leslie will share the do’s and don’ts of varnishing oil and acrylic paintings so that you can achieve the ideal results for protecting your finished artwork. Jimmy will discuss different types of varnish and application processes as well as the importance of drying times, oiling out, retouch varnish and more. This fantastic demo will be a wonderful source of information for creative individuals who want to try varnishing for the first time or anyone who would like to learn about different varnishing application methods and products.

 

Materials List

Winsor & Newton AAC UV Varnish: Gloss, Satin, and Matte (225ml) *Jimmy will demonstrate the Gloss version

Winsor & Newton AAC Varnish Remover (125ml)

Winsor & Newton Professional Damar Varnish Spray (11oz)

Winsor & Newton Professional Varnish Spray: Matte and Satin (11oz) *Jimmy will demonstrate the Gloss version

Winsor & Newton Professional Retouch Varnish Spray: Gloss (8.6oz)

Winsor & Newton Retouch Varnish (75ml)

A 1” & 2” flat utility brush such as the Opus Essential Gesso Brushes *Jimmy will use the Artists Acrylic Brush Utility – Size 1” & 2 from Winsor & Newton

Artist Bio

Jimmy Leslie is a painter, former college art professor and currently Resident Artist for the fine art brands Winsor & Newton and Liquitex. Jimmy directs their education program, The Fine Art Collective, and works with the W&N team on new product development. Of his personal work, Jimmy says, “I am constantly trying to achieve simplicity in my paintings which continues to be a lifelong challenge”. When teaching, Jimmy enjoys sharing the processes surrounding this challenge and seeks ways to convey information to students in a clear and concise manner which helps them overcome stumbling blocks.
