Introduction To Glass Fusing – Parts One & Two

$369.00 (+ tax)

Description

Our “part one and two combo” glass fusing class will provide you with the basic technical and practical skills to begin fusing glass. No previous experience is required! The classes are run on four consecutive weeks, one evening per week, each class being 2 ½ hours long.

During the first evening, the following topics will be covered: different types of glass and their compatibility, as well as working with glass in terms of designing and gluing together. You will get to create a set of four coasters, completely designed by you using a variety of forms of glass and glass colours to choose from. These glass forms include pre-cut sheet glass, stringers, noodles, rods, confetti, and frit. These will be loaded into the kiln for firing at the end of the first evening, and given back as finished products at the start of the second evening.

The second evening will begin with a review of the previous evening’s projects, and then you will start to create your second project – two small glass dishes. Instruction and demonstration will be given on basic cutting techniques, edge grinding, combining of different colours, and compatibility issues that can arise.

After the first two evenings, more practice and instruction will be given on the topics of glass compatibility, working with various glass forms, as well as kiln firing schedules (full fusing and slumping) and kiln usage and safety. You will also learn about more complicated glass cutting techniques including circle cutting and cutting S-curves. Introduction to using more equipment including the belt sander and disc grinder is also provided.

Over the last two evenings you will get to create two medium-sized dishes, one per evening. One will be square in shape and the other will be round. These dishes will be completely designed by you using a variety of glass forms and colours. They will be fired in the kilns at the end of each evening, and available for pick-up from the studio the following week.

All the materials you need for this class are provided by the studio, including base and accessory glass, noodles, stringers, frit, rods, and confetti. All studio tools needed will be available for your use while working with the glass, and your work will be fired in one of our two Skutt kilns. We suggest you bring a notebook and pen if you wish to take notes during the classes.

Please note that glass fusing tools, materials, and glass can be ordered through the studio if you wish to have some of your own for future practice and creations.

Cost: $369.00 (+ tax)
