Soapstone Sculpture: Carve a Seal Head

$105

Description

Instructor; Katherine Woods. Who on the West Coast hasn’t seen the face of a harbour seal peering up out of the water? As a sculpture, this design is simple enough for a beginner, but offers a ongoing challenge exploring the subtlety of the curves.
Soapstone is the softest naturally-occurring stone, and is the easiest to carve. This workshop covers all you need to know – tools, design, roughing out, through to finishing and polishing. You will go home at the end of the day with a finished stone carving of an seal head (about 6″ long). Wear old clothes or a shop apron – you will get dusty!
Katherine Woods has been carving for over forty years in stone and wood. She taught carving and wood turning at Camosun and Tools ‘n Space Woodworking for twenty years. Her sculpture appears frequently at Sooke Fine Arts and at local galleries.
