Mel Unger is a self-taught artist whose passion is illustrating birds with coloured pencils. Her vibrant and detailed illustrations can take from one to a few weeks from start to finish; for this demonstration, she will bring in completed pieces and share the techniques she uses.
The primary focus of this demo will be about maximizing your oil-based coloured pencils because Faber-Castell Polychromos is her pencil of choice. She will show you how to layer, blend, burnish, etch and melt your colours together to create vibrant illustrations. Because her passion is bird art, she will also go over how she free-hand draws her birds and how to focus on parts of the anatomy to bring your bird to life.
The main product Mel will be demonstrating is Polychromos, but she will also show you how you can use Faber-Castell’s various products together to create mixed-media art, such as combining their Pitt Artist Pens with their Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils. For this class, feel free to bring a camera and take pictures of the colour charts and cheat sheet references she has created for her personal use that may come in handy for you!
