Future Fibres — Paper for Our Planet
January 4, 2022The NEW Natural Line of papers from Hahnemühle offers simple, sustainable choices for drawing and mixed media surfaces.
Hahnemühle has been striving to produce more environmentally friendly and sustainable paper for over a decade.
In 2008 they launched their mixed media paper Bamboo, made from 90% bamboo fibres – a fast-growing and sustainable raw material – and 10% cotton rag. The range was soon extended to include bamboo papers and books suitable for different painting techniques.
More recently, new fabrication innovations with hemp and agave have allowed Hahnemühle to focus even more on resource-saving and environmentally-friendly surfaces. Hahnemühle’s Natural Line integrates them all: Hemp Sketch, Bamboo Mixed Media and Agave Watercolour, offering a sustainable alternative to a wide range of traditional artist papers.
All Natural Line papers are vegan, resistant to aging, and acid-free.
More info from Hahnemuhle:
With the Natural Line you now have a sustainable alternative to traditional artist papers. By using rapidly-growing renewable raw materials, valuable resources such as water can be saved, which is good for the environment.
For detailed drawing on paper, try Hahnemühle’s Hemp Sketch or Bamboo Sketch. The Bamboo Mixed Media is great for various painting techniques and Agave Watercolour is ideal for all wet painting techniques. From pads to sheets, rolls, and books, the Natural Line has the right paper for everyone.
Hemp Sketch
Sustainable sketches are easily created on papers made of hemp. Simple doodles or detailed drawings with different pens come out perfectly on the Hemp Sketch Paper.
“I find Hemp Sketch is perfect for sketches and initial drafts with pencil or dry painting techniques.”

Bamboo Mixed-Media
This is the ideal painting surface for strong colour tones such as a radiant sky blue with high contrasts and strong colour intensity, or for soft tones such as a glittering white of snow-covered mountain peaks. The bamboo fibres absorb lots of water, making it perfect for a wide variety of painting, drawing and mixed techniques.
“Bamboo Mixed Media is very interesting for opaque painting techniques such as acrylic or gouache. Perfect for plein air painting as the paper supports very well the density and thickness of the brushstroke. “
