Morning Glory
Our land is our mother. We honour and respect the land and are thankful to all the gifts she gives us. Our love for the land is part of our very being.
I’ve been a successful contemporary Mohawk Indigenous artist from the territory of Six Nations, Oshewkan, Ontario, Canada for over 40 years. After raising four daughters, I attended the University of British Columbia and completed a Fine Arts Degree. Although my journey has had many twists and turns along the way and I consider myself a late bloomer, I’ve always found refuge in my art. I believe that visual art can be a vehicle to illustrate cultural and spiritual beliefs.
Vision Quest
Presently I am working on a series of female figures who represent the strength and spirituality of our Indigenous peoples. I believe painting is a form of storytelling and each one of my figures has a story to tell. As I am painting my robed women, they become intimate friends and each one has their own story to tell. The bright colours and intricate patterns weave a non-verbal language that gives thought to messages from our ancestors. Our stories are an intricate part of passing on knowledge to our youth, to help them understand the complexities of the world around them.
Colour speaks to me in an intimate language. There is no doubt my Indigenous worldview plays a large part in the explosion of hues that burst from my work. They shower us with a positive sense of emotional energy and healing. I also think humour is a great healer and in many of my paintings you can find a sense of playfulness that brings a smile to your heart.
